On Sacrifice

January 2, 2007

At the beginning of 2007 we began to hear of President Bush’s impending “new strategy” for the war in Iraq, what came to be known as “the Surge.” The president would give a speech on January 10 outlining the strategy, and as usual his speechwriters made sure to link any opposition to the president’s plans to a lack of appreciation for the sacrifices made by the troops: “They have watched their comrades give their lives to ensure our liberty. We mourn the loss of every fallen American—and we owe it to them to build a future worthy of their sacrifice.” Of course, in order to do that, you actually need a plan that has a prayer of working. Short of that, you are simply and starkly killing our brothers and sisters, and sons and daughters, and friends and neighbors, to justify having killed the ones you killed earlier.
